Is Europe ready for the EU authorities’ ambitious plans to decarbonise transport?

Although Europe is not yet fully ready for ambitious transport decarbonisation plans, many countries and companies are already taking steps in this direction.

Implementing the EU authorities’ ambitious plans aimed at transport decarbonisation would require a wide range of activities to be performed by Member States and the private sector. Despite this, many European countries are already taking steps to reduce emissions in transport, and many companies in the automotive sector have been investing in development of electric vehicles and alternative energy sources.

EU authorities also pursue initiatives to support transport decarbonisation, such as implementation of the “European Green Deal” with the view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by at least 90% by 2050, and the “Ready for 55” initiative which will facilitate regulatory stability and allow changes to be planned accordingly to create an investment-friendly environment.

It should be mentioned that implementation of ambitious transport decarbonisation plans will require significant financial investments and R&D efforts. There are also challenges related to charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and integrating different energy sources into the power grid.

For this reason, although Europe is not yet fully ready for ambitious transport decarbonisation plans, many countries and companies are already taking steps in this direction, and the EU authorities seek to provide adequate support and a suitable framework for these efforts.
